Clever ways to cut down on your wedding costs

Summer is just around the corner and that means we’re approaching peak wedding season! After having done some research, soon-to-be newlyweds will face a rude shock realizing that tying the knot comes at a premium price. As the average cost of a wedding gets into the $30,000 to $50,000 range, your big day sometimes can turn into a financial nightmare. Fret not! Who says your special day can’t be both interesting and affordable? With these tips, you can trim your bills without compromising the style or elegance of your wedding.

  • Set a budget

Never jump into a wedding planning process without setting a budget to begin with. Figure out how much you’re willing to spend on this once-in-a-lifetime celebration and work within those parameters. Since couples usually end up going over the initial budget they set, having a ballpark figure for the cost will help you control all the expenses. This will ensure that you don’t get into unwanted debts after returning from honeymoon.

  • Draw up a list of “Must-Haves” vs. “Wish-To-Haves”

Create a list of your wedding details and decide whether each of them belongs to must-haves or wish-to-haves. Then the next step seems to be easier, allocate your budget to must-haves. Still have some money remaining? Spend on some of your desired items that might make your big day more special.

  • Limit the guest list

Wedding reception takes up the bulk of your budget; that means the more guests, the higher the cost might be. Unless you and your husband-to-be are both social butterflies or have a lot of money to spare, it’s a wise choice to go for an intimate celebration with just your family and closest friends. Just invite people who play an important role in your life and leave out hi-bye friends as well as acquaintances.

  • Timing

Stay away from weekend weddings which are more expensive with Saturdays being the most extortionate and choose to have your banquet on a weekday night if you’re on a tight budget. Furthermore, as Saturday is the most popular day to get hitched, you will have fewer vendor choices on that day, which reduces your chance of shopping around for deals.

  • Invitations

Chances are 20 years later, neither you nor the guests will remember about how classy your wedding invitations looked like so there’s no need to splurge on this area. Just pick one fabulous element and stick with a simple style. Keep in mind that decorative envelop linings, custom-colored inks and fancy typography can send the price up. Also consider sending e-cards instead of printing all your invites to keep printing costs down.
